TSLA tangible book value vs market cap. Run the numbers yourself. The gap is enormous. You are paying for goodwill and brand premium and hope. Tesla Inc. is a fine business but at this price you are gambling on future cash flows that may never materialize. I will pass until the multiple compresses to something that reflects actual asset value.

O

Let me be direct about TSLA. Tesla Inc. is priced for perfection in an imperfect world. The Shiller adjusted P/E is well above historical norms. The EV/EBITDA multiple is in the top decile of its sector. Mean reversion is not a theory. It is a mathematical certainty. The only question is timing. I keep hearing bulls say "this time is different" and "the multiple is justified by growth." I have been investing long enough to know those are the two most expensive sentences in the English language. Every bubble in history was justified by growth that was supposed to last forever. Very few did. The smart move here is patience. Let the multiple compress. Let the narrative crack. Then buy the same business at a reasonable price. What is your exit plan if the growth slows by even 3 percent?

Looked at TSLA on a net-net basis. Not even close. Tesla Inc. trades at a multiple of tangible book that assumes everything goes right for the next decade. Where is the margin of safety? I will tell you where. Nowhere. You are paying for a story and calling it an investment. The balance sheet tells a different story than the stock chart. Goodwill and intangibles are a massive chunk of assets. Strip those out and the tangible book is a fraction of the market cap. That means if the growth narrative breaks you are holding equity worth half what you paid. Maybe a third. I have seen this playbook enough times to know how it ends.

I have been building a bear case on TSLA for weeks and I think the situation is worse than most people realize. Let me walk through it. Tesla Inc. is carrying debt levels that look manageable when rates are low and revenue is growing. But what happens when growth normalizes and refinancing costs are 200 basis points higher than the debt they are rolling off? The interest coverage ratio deteriorates fast. That is not a hypothetical. That is arithmetic. Then there is the competitive landscape. Two quarters ago a new entrant started taking share in the core market. Management dismissed it on the earnings call. The next quarter the share loss accelerated. Management blamed macro. Do you see the pattern? When management blames macro for company specific problems it is usually a sign the moat is narrower than they claimed. Inventory is also building. Days sales of inventory is up meaningfully year over year. That is either channel stuffing or demand softening. Neither is good. I have seen this combination before. High debt, rising competition, building inventory, and a management team in denial. It rarely ends well for shareholders. What data point would change my mind? Sustained organic growth reacceleration for two consecutive quarters. Not one. Two. One quarter can be a fluke or a benefit from easy comps. Two quarters is a trend. Until I see that I am not touching this.

TSLA is the most recommended stock on every finance app right now. Tesla Inc. is on every buy list. Every analyst has it at buy or overweight. When everyone agrees the trade is crowded. And crowded trades unwind violently when the narrative shifts. I am not shorting yet. But I took my profits and I am watching from the sidelines with popcorn.

I spent fifteen years on institutional trading desks before I walked away and I can tell you that the order flow in TSLA does not look like organic demand. Tesla Inc. is being accumulated by algorithms and passive flows, not by fundamental buyers making conviction based decisions. When the machines decide to rotate the selling will be just as mechanical. The price action looks strong but the foundation is synthetic. I have seen this pattern before. It does not end well for the retail investors who think they are riding institutional coattails.

Every time I look at TSLA I see the same thing. A crowded long with deteriorating fundamentals hiding behind a narrative. Tesla Inc. guided down last quarter and the stock went up. That is not a healthy market. That is momentum. And momentum works until it does not. Short interest is low. Borrow is cheap. Nobody is positioned for a downside surprise. That is exactly when surprises hurt the most. I am not saying crash tomorrow. I am saying the risk reward is terrible from here.

Nobody is pricing the tail risk in TSLA. Everyone models the base case and the bull case. Nobody models the black swan. Tesla Inc. has concentrated exposure to risks that are low probability but high impact. Regulatory action. Supply chain disruption. Key person dependency. Any one of these hitting would reprice the stock 30 to 50 percent overnight. The probability is low. The impact is catastrophic. When you are priced for perfection the tail risk is where the real danger lives. I am hedging my long exposure with out of the money puts. Insurance is cheap when nothing is going wrong.

TSLA weekly RSI showing bearish divergence. Price made a higher high but RSI made a lower high. Tesla Inc. momentum is fading even as the price rises. This is not a sell signal by itself but it is a warning. I am watching volume on the next pullback. If volume expands on red days the divergence is confirmed and I am reducing.

F
fiduciary_fury🐻 Bajista27d

I am going to say something unpopular about TSLA. The institutional consensus on Tesla Inc. is bought and paid for. The sell side analysts covering this name have investment banking relationships with the company. Their buy ratings are not independent analysis. They are marketing materials. When you see 90 percent buy ratings on a stock trading at a premium multiple you should ask yourself who benefits from that rating. Follow the money. I am not saying the business is bad. I am saying the analysis you are reading is compromised. Do your own work. Read the 10-K. Read the footnotes. Stop relying on analysts who are paid to tell you to buy.

I keep asking bull case supporters of TSLA one question and nobody gives me a good answer. What happens when the competition catches up? Tesla Inc. has a first mover advantage but advantages erode. Competitors are investing heavily. The moat looks wide today but moats narrow when the prize is big enough. I see at least two well funded competitors making real inroads. In two years the competitive landscape will look different. Is anyone pricing that?

The 2s10s spread is telling you something about TSLA that the equity market is ignoring. The curve is pricing in slowing growth. Tesla Inc. is a growth stock. Growth stocks do poorly when growth slows. It really is that simple. The bond market has been right more often than the stock market at inflection points. Right now the bond market is flashing yellow and the stock market is acting like the light is green. One of them is wrong. I am betting on the bond market.

D
delusion_detector🐻 Bajista34d

The bull thesis on TSLA is built on three assumptions and I think two of them are wrong. Assumption one: growth continues at current rates. Assumption two: margins hold or expand. Assumption three: the competitive moat is durable. Tesla Inc. is a good business but good businesses at bad prices are still bad investments. Let me attack assumption two because that is where I see the biggest disconnect. Input costs are rising. Labor costs are rising. The pricing power that protected margins last cycle is showing cracks. Tesla Inc. raised prices and volume softened. That is elastic demand. When demand is elastic you cannot raise prices to offset margin compression. You have to eat it. And eating margin compression while trading at a premium multiple is a recipe for multiple compression and earnings decline at the same time. That is the double whammy nobody is pricing for.

Q2 deliveries beat but only because of price cuts. Margin compression is the real story. Automotive gross margin ex-regulatory credits is like 14% now compared to 25% two years ago.

TSLA at 50 P/E with auto margins compressing and China EV makers eating their lunch globally. BYD just passed them in global EV sales. The robotaxi story is 5 years away minimum. This is a 150 stock at best.

TSLA bouncing off the 200-day moving average at 240. If it holds we could see 280. If it breaks, 220 is next support. RSI at 42, not oversold yet. Sitting on my hands for now.

R
RuriousCull🐂 Alcista84d

Tesla is not a car company. It's an AI, energy, and robotics company. When Optimus goes into production and FSD gets regulatory approval, the TAM is 10x what anyone is modeling. I'm holding until 2030.

M
m.lee🐂 Alcista86d

Everyone acting like TSLA's bounce off $240 support is some kind of second coming, but I'm not buying it. RSI just crossed back above 50 and bulls are celebrating like we broke out of a multi-month range - we haven't. We're still grinding under the 200-day MA and every rally attempt has been sold into hard. That's distribution, not accumulation. The 50-day is still pointing down. Volume on green days has been underwhelming compared to the red day selloffs. That's not a chart that screams "institutional conviction" to me - that looks like retail FOMO walking into smart money exits. Yeah Musk headlines move it short-term, but the actual flow data tells a different story from the hype. So here's what I keep coming back to - with TSLA still struggling to reclaim the 200-day MA after multiple failed attempts, what are the institutional positioning data and recent Form 4 insider filings actually signaling about where the $240 level holds or cracks?

S
scott_thomas🐂 Alcista87d

Okay hot take incoming - I actually think the bear case on TSLA is stronger right now than most growth bulls want to admit, and I say that as someone who's been long since $180. The problem isn't Elon's distraction or the brand damage (real but priced in imo). It's the multiple. TSLA is still trading at ~70x forward earnings while auto revenue growth basically flatlined YoY. FSD and robotaxi are doing a lot of heavy lifting for a valuation that size - and we've been "one quarter away" from those catalysts for like three years straight. I'm not loading up more here. The AI angle is real and I genuinely believe in the long-term Optimus + autonomy story. But the timeline risk is brutal and the stock price isn't giving you any margin of error. So what's actually the biggest difference between the bull and bear case right now - is it just about whether you believe FSD revenue materializes before that 70x multiple compresses further?

C
CetailEric🐂 Alcista88d

TSLA's current implied volatility sitting around 55% is basically the market admitting it has no idea what this stock actually is anymore. I've been watching the options flow and the 30-delta calls are pricing in moves that make zero fundamental sense for a company where automotive gross margins just dipped under 18%. Yet here we are with a forward P/E somewhere north of 80x while legacy OEMs are trading at 5-6x. That gap is enormous. I'm not a perma-bear here - I've played the earnings vol crush myself and made money on it. The robotaxi and AI angle is real enough to trade around. But "real enough to trade" and "justifies 80x earnings" are two very different conversations. The stock's been rangebound near $175-180 for weeks and the IV isn't collapsing - that tells me even the smart money can't agree. So genuinely asking: with TSLA trading at 80x forward earnings while automotive margins are compressing, how much of that multiple is actual business execution vs. pure Elon narrative premium?

I
IatientJustin🐻 Bajista89d

Honestly, TSLA at a ~70x forward PE in this macro environment feels like the market is still pricing in 2021 euphoria. VIX has been creeping back up, credit spreads are widening, and rate cuts keep getting pushed out - none of that's friendly for a growth stock that basically needs everything to go right. Margins have been getting compressed with each price cut, deliveries missed last quarter, and the energy/FSD pivot feels more like a narrative patch than a proven revenue engine yet. I'm not saying Tesla's going to zero. The brand still has pull, and Musk can move markets with a tweet. But sitting at ~70x forward earnings while legacy automakers are catching up on EV range and charging infrastructure? That's a lotta faith. Bears feel pretty comfortable here. So genuine question - what single catalyst would actually flip your view on TSLA and make you think that ~70x multiple is actually justified going into a potentially slowing economy?
