Read articleMy grandfather kept gold coins in a safe deposit box for forty years. He never sold them. He never traded them. He just held them, through inflation, recessions, bull markets, and bear markets, as a form of financial insurance. When he passed away, those coins were worth many times what he paid - but that was never the point. The point was that he had something tangible, outside the financial system, that would hold value no matter what happened to the banks or the stock market.
Gold and silver are not investments in the traditional sense. They don't generate earnings, pay dividends, or compound over time. A bar of gold purchased in 1980 is the exact same bar of gold today - it hasn't grown, hired employees, or developed new products. What it has done is preserved purchasing power across centuries, which is a feat that very few paper currencies or political systems can match.
The precious metals intelligence tools here approach gold and silver analytically rather than mystically. Real interest rates, central bank purchases, mining supply, and industrial demand all affect precious metals prices. Understanding these drivers helps you decide whether metals belong in your portfolio, and if so, in what form - physical bullion, ETFs, mining stocks, or some combination.
I hold a small allocation to gold - around 5% of my portfolio. Not because I expect it to outperform stocks (historically, it hasn't over long time horizons), but because it tends to be uncorrelated with equities during market stress. When stocks crashed in 2008 and 2020, gold held its value or rose. That diversification benefit, not speculative gains, is the real case for precious metals. If you're buying gold expecting to get rich, you'll probably be disappointed. If you're buying it as a store of value and portfolio stabilizer, that's a more realistic expectation.
